The Ethics of Physician-Assisted Suicide
Thursday, October 20, 2016 Noon-1pm, HSLC 2272
Since Oregon passed the Death with Dignity Act in 1994, four US states have enacted laws that protect doctors who prescribe lethal doses of drugs to terminally ill patients. While the practice is gaining legal acceptance, questions regarding whether and how physician-assisted suicide should be embraced by the medical community continue to be debated. Drawing on history, ethics and the law, this discussion will investigate some of the major issues surrounding physician assisted suicide in the present and future. The discussion will be led by Dr. Norman Fost.
Norman Fost, MD, MPH, is a professor of pediatrics and bioethics whose areas of interest include: ethical and legal issues in research and genetic screening, the use of performance enhancing drugs, access to growth hormone, the definition of death, and end-of-life issues.
